Dear GrowerThe British Beet Research Organisation (BBRO) has officially launched its 4x4 Initiative that aims to help growers increase yields by 4% on average for each of the next four years, 2012-2015. This initiative was highlighted at the BBRO's 'Closing the Gap Conference' which took place in January. The initiative is aimed at ensuring the UK sugar industry remains efficient and competitive, facing the challenges beyond the EU sugar regime reforms of 2015, which could see further liberalisation of the market. The objective of the BBRO will be to focus its research and communications efforts toward providing growers and industry advisers with the information and techniques to help to continue to increase yields to achieve the 4x4 target.CommunicationsBBRO communications will focus on supporting growers with the information they require to increase and meet the 4x4 target. Growers will see a change in the way that the BBRO produces information as well as demonstrating 'best practice' advice at its practical events. We will also be investigating new ways of providing bespoke advice for growers to ensure that we fully understand their needs.Grower/Adviser Working GroupsThe BBRO will be setting up grower and adviser groups to help in developing their crop management plans as well as checking what is needed to successfully deliver the 4x4 initiative. These groups will play a key part in providing feedback to the BBRO who are committed to engage with growers and advisers about the work it does.Centre of ExcellenceThe BBRO are confirming their intention to provide a 'Centre of Excellence' approach to how best to make available its advisory information and access to research results. This will be a theme that will become clear as it launches new initiatives via print, electronic/online and practical events throughout the coming months. If you have any questions about the new initiative please contact the BBRO or your British Sugar Area Manager.
