'Beet the Best' will allow sugar beet growers, university/college students, young farmers clubs and beet advisers to pit their wits against industry specialists and win a fantastic trip to the Castilla y León region of Spain in April 2011. The competition has been designed with a team of partners (NFU, BBRO and Newcastle University) and is split into three rounds that will be available on www.beetthebest.co.uk and on FWi in October, November and December 2010, and is based on an online questionnaire with the aim of producing a "virtual" sugar beet crop with maximum yield and profitability. To register your entry for the competition, visit the Beet the Best website and enter one of the three team categories or as an individual in the industry specialist category. Team entries are for a maximum of four members. Registration is open now and the first round kicks off on 1st October 2010. BASIS-registered entrants will receive 2 CPD points for each of the 3 rounds they complete as well as 4 NRoSO points for each of the 3 rounds. Questions are split into three rounds, which focus on a different stage of sugar beet crop management (Preparation, Crop Protection and Harvest & Delivery). Each round features 13 multiple-choice questions as well as two 'open' questions to further challenge the entrants. Judges from British Sugar, Farmers Weekly, BBRO, NFU and Newcastle University will review competition entries and announce the winners at the beginning of 2011. The prize is a once in a lifetime study tour to northern Spain. From 17th to 21st April the winners will be hosted on a tailor-made tour looking at beet sugar production in the region and visiting local farms.
There will also be a factory visit and tour round the AIMCRA research facility, not to mention plenty of opportunity to sample the other delights of this culturally rich Castilla y León region of Spain. http://www.beetthebest.co.uk/
