Farm Assurance Scheme changes

20 Sep 2010

Two new questions have been added to the Red Tractor farm assurance schemes this year in order to help growers easily comply with new mandatory requirements of the biofuel and bioliquid markets that are to be introduced with the Renewable Energy Directive from December.

Red Tractor logoThese questions are to enable growers to declare their total crop land area, and whether this land was in crop production system in 2008.

The changes have been designed to have minimal additional burdens on growers while providing an easy system of recognition of their crops for these new and growing markets.

Farms which supply data in response to the new questions will have straightforward access to these new markets for crops. Answering these new questions and providing the relevant information around land use and environmental sustainability will be checked and recorded easily at the annual assurance inspection, and no other burdens of proof will then be needed for scheme members.

Participation in this system will offer broader benefits for assured farms, as crops with the badge of assurance will have a significant market advantage for these new growing markets, through ability to demonstrate sustainable production.

This will facilitate trading and this will support demand for UK crops in Europe, adding value to crops and supporting prices in the UK.

To help answer any enquiries that you may have regarding this issue, please see the attached FAQ document below.
