Frost Bulletin

30 Jan 2012

British Sugar's weather forecasting service is predicting sub zero temperatures for many parts of the beet growing area over the next 10 days.  These temperatures have the potential to damage unprotected clamps and un-harvested crops. Please monitor your local forecast and consider the following points/ actions.

  • Preparations should be made to protect clamps and ensure your crop remains fit for processing.
  • Following frost events clamps should be inspected for evidence of frost damage, damaged roots should be skimmed from the sides and tops of clamps and delivered as soon as delivery schedules allow.
  • Do not load beet which have started to deteriorate due to frost or disease.
  • Beet which remains un-harvested will be vulnerable to damage, with reductions in sugar content and increased loss from crowning to remove damaged parts of the roots likely.
  • Growers may wish to consider completing their harvest and placing beet into protected clamps ahead of the onset of low temperatures.
  • Beet should be inspected prior to harvest for signs of damage, tramlines and low lying areas should be the focus of inspections.
  • Crops showing signs of damage should not be placed into store unless the entire damaged portion of the root can be removed during harvest.
  • Crops containing frost damage roots should be delivered within 24hrs of harvest, harvesting should not take place before delivery arrangements have been agreed with the haulier and processing factory concerned.

For further advice please contact your British Sugar Area Manager.

If you require additional clamp sheets please contact 0870 240 2314.
