Ruth Digby
Interim Chief Sugar Adviser
A graduate of Law, with a Masters in Biotechnology, Law and Ethics, Ruth Digby has worked for the NFU since October 2007.
Following her master’s degree Ruth worked on two European 6th Framework research projects on the introduction of genetically modified crops into agriculture, heading up the work packages on legislation.
Since she joined in October 2007, Ruth has been part of the NFU’s food and farming department at the headquarters in Stoneleigh, working in the crops team and taking the role as lead adviser for the NFU on seeds policy and non-food markets. Ruth took up the role of Interim Chief Sugar Adviser in April 2012.
Donald Hume
Beet Intake Manager
Donald graduated with an honours degree in Mechanical Engineering. He has worked in Quality related posts for most of his career in a variety of engineering industries, mainly in bearings both in the UK and in China. He has also been employed in the electronic and rubber industries.
He joined NFU Sugar in 2001 and has responsibility for reception and beet intake. He also recruits and manages the seasonal staff who work in the factories and central tarehouse.
He and his team are responsible for ensuring that growers’ deliveries of beet are handled as per the contract and assessed/paid for in accordance with agreed procedure laid down between the NFU and British Sugar.
Chris Wheatley
Assistant Sugar Adviser
Chris has a HND in Electronics and Telecommunications. Chris worked for Marconi Telecommunications as an apprentice and for several years following graduation.
He then went on to work Barclays Bank plc in the Learning and Development team, before joining the NFU in 2005.
Chris worked in the NFU Economics team as the Information and Statistics Co-ordinator before becoming the NFU Assistant Sugar Adviser in 2008.
