Full compensation to be paid June 2009
EU Commission publishes regulation amendment to allow early payment of sugar restructuring compensation
Following lobbying by the NFU and its European colleagues in CIBE, the European Commission has approved the full payments of sugar restructuring compensation in June 2009.
The compensation was originally due to be paid in two instalments, one third in June 2009 and two thirds in February 2010. But, earlier this year Commissioner Fisher-Boel suggested the funds could be available in full this year. The NFU and the European Beet Growers Association, CIBE, began lobbying the Commission to ensure this happened.
An update to the regulations has been published today and, although the early payments are optional for each Member State, the RPA has confirmed to the NFU that it will inform the Commission of its intention to pay the compensation in full in June this year.
