Waterlogged land issues

Issues for growers to be aware of if still lifting beet on waterlogged land.

Historically farmers would have had to apply for a derogation to access waterlogged land.

On 1 January 2010, the revised Soil Protection Review (SPR) was launched. All farmers who receive payments under the Single Payment Scheme (SPS) must now comply with an updated series of Good Agricultural and Environmental Conditions standards (GAECs), of which the revised SPR is GAEC 1.

As of 1 January 2010, farmers no longer need to apply for a derogation to access waterlogged land, but must use the SPR2010 to record access to waterlogged soil on their land and actions taken to mitigate any damage caused by this.

There are two links included at the bottom of this page, one is a Defra article which gives more information and guidance on the Soil Protection Review.

The second link is to the new Cross Compliance guidelines that have been released since December 2009, which growers will need to read and refresh themselves with.
